LET IT SNOW...

And it's done! Few days since BATMAN: NOEL has been released in USA, and I'm pretty happy of first reactions, must say.:)

This graphic novel gave me the opportunity to work on atmospheres and characters I'd never approached before and to deal with a color not much explored by me: WHITE, which is a big presence in the book (it snows on the 80% of the story:D).

With these pages I felt like working something in between background painting in animation and film tinting in cinema and I guess much of my sensation is due to the stunning rendering and the movie-like approach of the writer/artist Lee Bermejo.

My goal here, as I first experimented on "Wednesday Comics", was to let Lee's detailed pencils to "live" losing nothing of the beautiful play of lights and shadows visible on the black and white version and at the same time giving a precise chromatic quality to each sequence in order to underline the cuts from scene to scene.

Often during a work in progress on a book, especially if it's long like that, there's more than one moment in which you feel your former enthusiasm getting lower and you fall in a production routine that can badly influence the quality. With "Batman: Noel" this didn't happen and I sincerely hope this emotional fidelity is clear on the printed pages.

A small note: I didn't know that Jim Lee'd have introduced our work until I saw it printed on the book… and… well… it was great!!

Ed anche questa è fatta! Da pochi giorni Batman: Noel è uscito in USA e devo dire che sono piuttosto contenta delle prime reazioni.:)

Questa graphic novel mi ha dato la possibilità di lavorare su atmosfere e su alcuni personaggi con cui non mi ero mai cimentata e di gestire un colore da me praticamente mai esplorato: il BIANCO, che qui è presente in gran quantità (nevica sull' 80% delle tavole:D)

Con queste pagine ho sentito il mio lavoro qualcosa a metà tra il background painting nell'animazione e il film tinting nel cinema e credo che molto di questa mia sensazione sia dovuto alla splendida resa grafica e alla regia cinematografica delle tavole di Lee Bermejo che come molti sapranno è anche l'autore dei testi.

Il mio obiettivo qui come già avevo sperimentato in parte su "Wednesday Comics" era permettere alle dettagliatissime ambientazioni di Lee di "vivere" non perdendo nulla dei giochi di luce ed ombre presenti sul bianco e nero e allo stesso tempo dare un carattere cromatico ben preciso ad ogni sequenza per sottolineare gli stacchi narrativi della storia.

C'è spesso durante la lavorazione di un fumetto specialmente se piuttosto lunga, più di un momento in cui senti l' entusiasmo iniziale ridursi e cadi in una routine produttiva che può influire negativamente sulla qualità. Con "Batman: Noel" questa cosa non è successa e spero sinceramente che questa fedeltà emotiva mantenuta dall' inizio alla fine sia percepibile sulle pagine stampate.

Piccola nota: non sapevo che Jim Lee avrebbe presentato il nostro lavoro nella prefazione fino a che non ho visto il libro stampato… e… beh… piuttosto emozionante!:)

Dylan Dog Color Fest n.7

Oggi esce il Dylan Dog Color Fest n.7 e finalmente posso postare una versione dell'illustrazione realizzata a "6 mani" per la copertina. :)

La matita è degli eccezionali Raul e Gianluca Cestaro con i quali già da tempo si parlava di una collaborazione...e l'occasione fortunatamente è arrivata ed è arrivata con un gran personaggio a cui sono legate le mie prime letture di fumetti.

La colorazione ha richiesto parecchio lavoro, ma aver visto due indiscussi esponenti della scuola del bianco e nero soddisfatti del risultato e pronti a ripetere l'esperienza, mi ha totalmente ripagato.

Ho inoltre realizzato una variant extra di cui è stata stampata un' esclusiva serigrafia.

Mi han fatto notare che questo mese sul Mega ci sono i miei colori sia sulla copertina (a destra) che sul retro (a sinistra):). Le posto in attesa di poter mettere immagini di maggior qualità (la scansione qui non rende benissimo l'idea, è tutto un po' cupo...).

I'm grateful to the amazing editor Mark Chiarello for having the chance to be the colorist on this terrific project. It's a big challenge and a big fun.

More than a sketch.

Mantova Comics & Games 2006.

As a matter of fact it marks the start of my collaboration with amazing artist Lee Bermejo with whom, the same year, I had the chance to do my first work for US market.
I'll never forget the nice talk we had while he was drawing this little piece of art…
Not many people have seen it because it's been preserved in my small collection since then. Anyway I thought to share it with you because in these days I'm often thinking about how much this professional relationship has grown and I'm happy to be still now with him on a big book after the great Wednesday Comics experience.
At this point I really would like to show some work in progress but the only thing I can do is to link Lee's blog for people who want to have a taste of what I'm talking about.
Now I go back to work and do my best on these absolutely terrific pages.:)

In effetti segna l'inizio della mia collaborazione con l'eccezionale artista Lee Bermejo con cui nello stesso anno ho avuto l'opportunità di fare il mio primo lavoro per il mercato americano.

Non dimenticherò mai la simpatica chiacchierata fatta con lui mentre disegnava questo piccolo capolavoro…

Poche persone hanno potuto vedere questo disegno dal momento che è rimasto custodito gelosamente nella mia piccola collezione da allora. Ad ogni modo ho pensato di postarlo perché proprio in questi giorni mi capita spesso di pensare a quanto questo rapporto professionale sia cresciuto e sono felice di essere tuttora con lui al lavoro su un progetto dopo la fantastica esperienza del Wednesday Comics.

A questo punto vorrei tanto postare un po' di work in progress ma posso solo linkare il blog di Lee per quelli che vogliono un assaggio.

Ora mi rimetto al lavoro cercando di fare del mio meglio su queste tavole impressionanti.:)

When I don't color something I mainly have fun with drawing and dance (among the other things I like doing in my spare time). Don't think I'll post anything about dance here unless it's tightly connected to visual arts…
Anyway yesterday night I couldn't fall asleep for some reason and I started playing with red and white sanguigna; this is what came out.

...and I'd like to say few words about Superman Earth One.
Finally this big book on which I spent a good amount of months is out in USA!! In truth it happened some weeks ago and as usual I'm late with my posts:)
I'm absolutely happy to have had a new opportunity to work on Superman after my first experience on Wednesday Comics.
Anyway it took a while before I get more deeply involved in the project because it was long time I hadn't been working on inks and I needed to see how my colors could match with the new line style I was approaching to.
After about the tenth page I felt ready to go and have fun.
Now that it' s done and I have it here on my desk, I'm glad to go around and see how many people is discussing about it on the web (hey, I'm human!) and I feel the need to say some thanks to who asked me to have a part in this adventure and to who contributed with me to the final result.

Now for people who haven't seen or read anything about yet, I'm posting a couple of pages and some reviews; anyway take a look around for more points of view because the book is thankfully creating lively exchanges of ideas.

Just back from New York Comicon!! It's long time I'm not posting and I'd like to recover with this 8 in 1 image I colored a little time ago. Pencils are by artist Shane Davis whom I've worked with on Superman Earth One (soon I'll post about that!). Need to say thanks to editor Michael Marts who gave me the chance to work on such a big piece for the first time. I really had fun!

Su "W I R E D" di luglio con Einstein!!

Ora in edicola con una storia dedicata ad Einstein realizzata in team da Matteo Bordone (storia), Marco Castiello (disegni), Vincenzo Acunzo ed Emilio Laiso (aiuto matite), Rosario Costanzo (colori) e me (supervisione colori).
Che dire...a parte il piacere di collaborare con Wired, è stato divertente lavorare in un gruppo tutto italiano a stretto contatto con colleghi che sono anche cari amici. Un'esperienza da ripetere:)

When they asked me to do that, I really couldn't say no...

Great artists Philip Tan and Jonathan Glapion (penciler and finisher/inker actually working for DC Comics) got in touch with me to try some collaboration and after a first failed attempt, we've had the opportunity to do this double cover.

Main difficulty here was making all characters clearly distinguishable without losing impact, armony and depth.

Here you find the black and white piece.

Quando me lo hanno chiesto non ho potuto dire di no...

I bravissimi Philip Tan e Jonathan Glapion (rispettivamente penciler e finisher/inker che attualmente lavorano per DC Comics) mi hanno contattato qualche tempo fa per provare a collaborare assieme e dopo una prima occasione sfumata, si è presentata l'opportunità di realizzare questa doppia cover.

La principale difficoltà qui è stata quella di rendere evidenti e ben distinguibili tutti i personaggi, senza sacrificare impatto, armonia e profondità dell'immagine.

Qui trovate la tavola in bianco e nero.

Green Lantern #52 variant cover

Another Green Lantern cover colored little time ago. It's for issue #52 that will be out in Usa at the end of March.

Pencils by Shane Davis and inks by Sandra Hope.

I tried to obtain an iridescent material for Sinestro's suit taking advantage of the green and yellow reflections of the lanterns which have also given me the main light source to lighten the character.

In this case pencils and inks were suggesting the drama of the scene with an upward light, so differently from other pages in which I set lights and shadows, here I followed and tried to exalt the choices of the penciler.

This cover with Sinestro-White Lantern has been kept secret for more time than the following ones and today with great surprise I found it published on DC blog. There you'll find the regular cover too.

Altra cover per Green Lantern colorata qualche tempo fa per il numero 52 che uscirà negli Usa a fine marzo. Matita di Shane Davis e china di Sandra Hope.

Ho cercato di ottenere un tessuto un po' cangiante per la tuta di Sinestro sfruttando i riflessi verdi e gialli delle lanterne che mi hanno fornito anche la fonte di luce principale per illuminare il personaggio. Matita e china in questo caso mi suggerivano già la drammaticità della scena con luce dal basso e contrasti forti per cui, differentemente da altre tavole in cui imposto da zero luci ed ombre, qui ho assecondato le scelte del disegnatore cercando di esaltarne il più possibile l'effetto.

Questa cover con Sinestro-Lanterna Bianca è stata tenuta segreta per più tempo rispetto a quelle dei numeri successivi e oggi a sorpresa l'ho trovata pubblicata sul DC blog. Lì trovate anche la regular cover dello stesso numero.

Green Lantern #54 cover

Per quelli che si sono chiesti cosa mi abbia impedito di aggiornare ogni tanto il blog nell'ultimo periodo:

1. Non ho potuto postare nulla di ciò che stavo facendo perchè non ancora annunciato;

2. Non avevo immagini di riserva da postare perchè non riesco a trovare il tempo per produrre illustrazioni per il solo piacere di farlo:);

3. Non mi piace fare posts su mie faccende personali(...e ce ne sarebbero di cose da dire...:));

4. E' da un po' che non vado ad una fiera per cui non avevo niente di interessante neanche su quel fronte;

5. Di altre tematiche religiose, politiche, psicologiche e sociali preferisco parlare vis a vis piuttosto che sul blog.

Fatta questa interessantissima premessa, passo alle ultime novità professionali:

Mi sto occupando della colorazione di alcune covers della DC e della Wildstorm di cui oggi posso postare la prima che ho già visto pubblicizzata in giro da qualche giorno, ovvero quella di Green Lantern# 54 disegnata da Shane Davis e inchiostrata da Sandra Hope. Un lavoro piuttosto impegnativo per me che ho un feeling migliore con la matita piuttosto che con la china. Ad ogni modo mi sono divertita:)

Nell'ultimo periodo sono stata anche coinvolta dalla Marvel nell'avventura Girl Comics, una miniserie di 3 numeri la cui prima uscita è prevista per i primi di marzo. Io sarò su Girl Comics #1 sulle tavole di Emma Rios. Appena posso faccio un post apposito con tavole e commenti...

Per ora è tutto. Attendo di poter postare qualche altra novità e nel frattempo spero di incontrare a Mantova Comics & Games tutti quelli che con perseveranza continuano a cliccare questo blog.
